How to estimate tile

Tile is sold by the box. Measure the area to tile, add 10% waste for straight layouts and 15-20% for diagonal or patterned work, then divide by the coverage per box and round up to whole boxes.

Grout and thinset are the materials most often left off a fast quote — CraftTools adds them automatically. Set your box, grout and thinset prices plus your per-square-foot setting time in Settings and get a client quote with materials and labor priced.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra tile should I buy?

Add 10% for straight layouts and up to 15-20% for diagonal or patterned layouts to cover cuts and breakage.

How much grout and thinset do I need?

As a rule of thumb, about one bag of grout per 100 sq ft and one bag of thinset per 50 sq ft — more for small mosaics or large-format tile. This calculator adds both.
