What subfloor prep includes
Depending on the job: self-leveling compound for uneven slabs, a moisture barrier over concrete, scraping old adhesive or tile, replacing damaged plywood, and hauling away the old floor. Each is labor and material a bare flooring price does not cover.
Put it on the quote
The fix is simple: make subfloor prep its own line item, assessed at the walkthrough, not absorbed into the per-foot price. A client accepts it when it is explained up front and resents a change order when it is not. Add it in the estimate so the total is honest from the start.
