The tonnage formula
Multiply the area by the thickness in feet to get cubic feet, multiply by the compacted density of hot-mix asphalt (about 145 lb per cubic foot), then divide by 2000 to get tons. Thickness is usually 2–4 inches for driveways. The asphalt calculator does it for any shape.
Order a little extra
Add a small allowance for compaction, edges and cold joints so you don’t come up short on the mat. Running out mid-pour means a second load and a cold seam.
