Material vs labor
Ceramic material runs ~$1–$5/sq ft, porcelain $3–$10, and natural stone $7–$20+. Labor is $5–$14/sq ft and rises with smaller tiles (more grout lines), large-format (heavier, flatter substrate needed), and patterns like herringbone. The tile calculator prices both plus grout and thinset.
What raises the installed price
Wet-area waterproofing, subfloor leveling or backer board, intricate patterns, lots of cuts, and small job minimums all raise the effective cost per square foot. A backsplash or small bath costs more per foot than a big open floor because setup time is fixed.
